Abandoned Milkcan Mailbox

Abandoned Milkcan Mailbox

A really nice abandoned farmstead with many outbuildings and near a creek had this unusual milkcan mailbox. The farmstead appears to have been abandoned around 30-40 years. I’ve taken a number of photos of the property throughout the seasons. This last photo shoot was for photographing in portrait style and things or scenes normally missed or not photographed. How many times do we miss things hidden in plain sight?

I guess many times folks used what they had. Milk cans were necessities and were used for many things. So many of the newer generations would not know what they are.

The Purloined Letter comes to mind. On the evidence the mailbox survived the depredations of the county’s snowplows. Maybe I should try a milk can – fill it with Petoskey stones.

I wonder if that post goes all the way through the bottom of the can? I finally thwarted some plant thieves that way – rebar with a 90 degree bed securing the pots to the ground.

The rusty grasses are the perfect complement.

Montucky, these old milkcans were easy to find about 20 years ago but not now. I have an old milkcan that was painted by my mother–a beautiful country scene. Yes, milkcans were necessities and used for many things.

Gerry, hey, Petockey stones sounds great!

Shoreacres, that milkcan is anchored pretty well and mailbox chained. Yeah, I know thieves who bash mailboxes. Rebar? LOL Yep, that’ll work.

Thanks Montucky, Gerry, and Shoreacres for stopping by! :)
