Suspended in Time

Friends had invited us out to their homestead offering us some of their sweet corn. They also dug up some carrots and onions to give to us. We could not resist taking a few photos while we were there. This hatchet just caught my eye and I could not resist.

That’s not any old hatchet – never seen one like that before, guess it was made for specialist use with a nail extractor at the other end.

Gosh darn…since you left WP, I have not kept up with you. Going to Anita’s site reminded me. Sure have missed you guys. I love the textures here.

Preston, this is wonderful!! Great textures! Yes, it has a nail extractor on one end. I haven’t seen one like that either!

Or you could call it burying the hatchet. :) Nice processing to give it a frontier feel.

I wouldn’t have been able to resist either. :)

I like the grays and textures in this one. Nicely done, Preston.

That was a very nice find! I wish they still made hatchet handles like that one!

YB I think this is actually a tool for putting wood shakes, an early form of shingle, onto these old structures. The hatchet part would split the shakes to size and the hammer part to drive the nail, hence the nail extractor.

Michael, is great to hear from you Burstmode. Thanks for the comment.

Thank you Barbara. I had fun working with this one.

Scott I like your title the best.

A lot of non-photographers would wonder why someone would take such a shot Robin. This one really did sink in. Thanks Robin :)

I thought the wood grain of the handle added to the overall look of this photo. Thanks for noticing it Montucky.

Great shot. Hatchets like this were often used by carpenters long ago for instance for evening off the timber in a wall (at least before they put the panel up). Even if I have never seen one with a nail extractor before, I’m not surprised. It was probably very convenient.

One of my favorite summertime activities is enjoying the harvesting of the fields and gardens. And you can’t go wrong with a basket of fresh picked corn, carrots, and other yummy vegies. There’s just something about supper when it is with friends like that.

Staffan I bet those wood walls were fantastic, much better than paneling.

Anita all the vegetables were good, but the sweet corn was out of this world. Wonderful folks to share their bounty the way these do.

I love this shot!

Now this is different! Love the blue/purple in the steel ax head. Good stuff
